7 UI/UX Principles for a Website People Enjoy Using

Good UI/UX design is not decoration. It is the work of making a site easy to understand and pleasant to use, so visitors can do what they came to do. These seven principles apply to almost every website and app.

1. Establish a clear visual hierarchy

Guide the eye with size, weight, colour and spacing so the most important thing on each screen stands out. If everything is emphasised, nothing is.

2. Keep navigation simple and predictable

People should always know where they are and how to get elsewhere. Use familiar labels, a short main menu and consistent placement across pages.

3. Design for mobile first

Start with the smallest screen and add layout for larger ones. Touch targets should be comfortably large, text readable without zooming and key actions within thumb reach.

4. Write clear, human microcopy

Buttons, labels and error messages are part of the design. Say what will happen (“Send message”) and, when something goes wrong, explain how to fix it.

5. Be consistent

Reuse the same colours, components and patterns throughout. Consistency lowers the effort of learning your interface and makes the brand feel dependable.

6. Make it accessible

Use sufficient colour contrast, readable font sizes, visible focus states, descriptive link text and alt text for images. Accessible design helps everyone, including people on bright screens or slow connections.

7. Give feedback and keep it fast

Show that a click or form submission worked with clear states and confirmations. Fast loading and subtle motion make a site feel responsive rather than slow. Speed is also a conversion factor, as we cover in why websites fail to convert.

Test with real people

Even five short usability sessions reveal problems your team cannot see. Watch where people hesitate, then fix the biggest friction first.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between UI and UX?

UX covers the whole experience and how easily someone achieves their goal, while UI is the visual layer of screens, buttons and layouts they interact with.

Does good UX improve conversions?

Reducing confusion and friction usually helps more visitors complete actions such as enquiries or purchases.

How do I test usability on a budget?

Ask a handful of people to complete a task on your site while you watch and take notes. Patterns appear quickly.
